We are happy to welcome two new members of the Room 14 community. Ms. Laikin joins us from University of San Diego, where she completed her credential program (she worked with Ms. Schultz in Room 4 during her practicum!). She has already made strong connections with the students and is an integral part of our team. She will be working as an academic coach on Mondays and Tuesdays, and as lead teacher on Thursdays and Fridays. Wednesdays are alternating days. Her bio will be on the website shortly.
Ms. Dennis joins us as a teacher candidate (student teacher) from Point Loma Nazarene University, where she is earning her teaching credential. She worked in Room 14 during her observation hours, and we liked her so much, we convinced the university to let her stay! She will slowly be taking on more roles as lead teacher throughout the eight weeks in our class.
We have been learning about the history of California, and particularly San Diego, through the lens of city systems and infrastructure. Our journey has taken us through the Native American Era, the Spanish Colonial Era (or Mission Era), the Mexican Era (or Rancho Era), and the Gold Rush. After this, we will learn about Industrialization and our Present-Day systems. We'll have experts of all sorts, from city planners to transportation planners, to water authority speakers, etc. Our goal is to use this background to be able to design innovations in the systems of the city of the future.
As another part of our innovation project, we have been learning about robotics through LEGO Mindstorms. Students worked together to learn to build and program a rover. This work will help students later in designing their innovations for the future. In order to provide more background so that we can build working prototypes, we will soon begin learning about simple machines!
