We officially launched our project, Ideas that Change the World, on November 30th! In this project, we will be envisioning a city of the future, and will be creating our own inventions that help to make life easier or solve a problem in the world. See our project handout below.
We began by looking at historical celebrations of innovation, including World's Fairs and the EPCOT project. We did field work at the San Diego History Center, and gathered research about the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, a World's Fair that helped to develop our city into what it is today. We also visited the San Diego Automotive Museum to learn about the development of transportation and the vision of cars of the future. Thanks to all the parents who made this trip possible!
We have been learning about various innovations that changed the world, and are in the process of writing opinion pieces that present an argument for one innovation having a stronger impact on society. We are also learning about building and programming robots using Lego Mindstorms EV3. We will continue this work after the break, and also learn about simple machines.
As we prepare for vacation, we are celebrating our friendships. Students have a Secret Buddy, for whom they have been writing appreciations, letters showcasing the person's contributions and impact on our classroom, and creating homemade gifts personalized for their friend. We will do our Secret Buddy reveal on Friday, December 18th, along with our holiday celebration. Please sign up on the Shutterfly site to bring treats to share with the class.
We wish you a wonderful Winter Break! We hope you get to relax, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy each other. We look forward to seeing you and your children in the new year!
