Right-handed Bear Grab, Left-Handed Sponge Squeeze, Straw Javelin, Paper Plate Discus... these are some of the events for Room 14's Metric Olympics! We have been hard at work honing our skills in estimation and measuring length, mass, area, perimeter, and capacity. Students have been working in teams of 6, discussing their mathematical thinking and helping one another find the difference between their estimates and actual measurements. They have been learning about turn taking, collaboration, sharing ideas without just giving answers, and of course, math skills.
Our math skills have also been in effect in our Maker project. We have been working with Ms. Carrie on Mondays to learn to use Illustrator to create our templates for our laser cutter, and to format our artwork. We have been measuring and finding areas, and we have been getting our hands dirty. This Monday, students sanded and stained their wood. Now it's time for the laser cutter!
In writing, we have been hard at work revising our personal narratives. We have been critiquing, learning new ways to organize paragraphs and ideas, and then making changes to our work. Students have been using Google Classroom to type their work, and they have learned some new formatting and editing tips this week. We look forward to sharing all our work with you soon at Exhibition (November 4th)!
In other news...
Fall Festival is this Saturday! Students worked on our Zombie Clown scarecrow with Howard Lyon and Ms. Nicki (our student teacher from Point Loma Nazarene). It's scary!
Book orders are due this Friday as well. Please order online only, as we are trying to avoid collecting cash.
Next week, Monday is a Staff Day, so students do not come to school.
